Driveway repairs in Newcastle: what we fix and how a repair visit works

Most people who ring us about a repair already know something is wrong. A corner of the block paving has dropped, a puddle sits by the garage door for two days after rain, or the tarmac has started to break up where the car turns. What they want to know is whether it can be put right without paying for a whole new driveway.

Often it can. This page explains which faults we repair, what the visit looks like from first call to finished job, and the honest point at which a patch would be money badly spent. Our separate diagnosis guides go deeper into individual problems; this is the practical side of getting the work booked and done.

Faults we are regularly asked to repair

Repairs fall into a handful of patterns, and the material matters less than the cause underneath it. A dip in block paving and a dip in tarmac usually share the same root: the layer below has moved or washed out.

  • Block paving that has sunk, rutted or spread along a wheel line
  • Water pooling in low spots, against the house or at the garage threshold
  • Cracks, crumbling edges and potholes in tarmac
  • Loose stones or bald patches on a resin surface
  • Failed edging or kerbs that let the surface creep outwards
  • Lifted blocks around drainage channels, manholes or tree roots

What happens when you book a repair

You call 0191 743 3072 or send the quote form, tell us roughly what is happening, and we arrange to come and look. Photos help us judge whether the job is small or whether the whole area needs a closer look, but we will not price a repair purely from a picture, because the surface rarely tells the full story.

On site we look at the affected area and the ground around it: where water runs, where the car sits, whether the edges are holding, and whether the fault is isolated or the first sign of something wider. You then get a written price for the repair, and we explain what we are going to lift, what we are going to rebuild and why.

There is no deposit needed to book the work. You pay once the job is complete and you are happy with it.

How a lasting repair differs from a quick patch

The cheapest way to deal with a sunken patch of blocks is to lift them, throw some sand underneath and put them back. It looks fine for a season and then drops again, because whatever made it sink in the first place is still there.

A proper repair takes the surface up past the edge of the damage, digs out any soft or contaminated material, recompacts the base in layers and only then relays the top. On tarmac the damaged section is cut back to sound material with clean straight edges so the new tarmac bonds rather than sitting in a ragged hole. On resin, loose areas are taken back to a firm edge before new mix is trowelled in.

Where water is the cause, the repair includes dealing with it — adjusting falls, adding a channel drain or clearing a blocked outlet — otherwise the same spot fails again.

When a repair is the wrong answer

We would rather tell you a repair is not worth it than take your money for one that will not last. If more than a third of the driveway is moving, if the whole surface is breaking up rather than one area, or if the original base was never built for a car, patching becomes a cycle of return visits.

In that case we will say so on the visit and, if you want, price a resurfacing or full replacement alongside the repair so you can compare. You decide; there is no pressure either way.

Matching new work to an old surface

Blocks weather and fade, and tarmac greys with age, so a repaired patch will look newer than its surroundings at first. We reuse sound original blocks wherever possible and source the closest current match for any that are broken. The difference usually softens over a few months of weather and traffic.

If appearance matters more than cost — at the front of a house, for example — it can be worth widening the repair to a natural break line such as an edge course or a change of level, so the join is less obvious.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair driveways you did not install?+

Yes. Most of the repairs we are asked to look at are on driveways laid by someone else, often many years ago.

Is the repair covered by a guarantee?+

Ask us on the visit. Our new installations carry the 10-Year Guarantee; for a repair we will explain exactly what is covered before you agree to the work.

Can you just fix the sunken bit?+

Usually, provided the problem is local. We lift past the damaged area and rebuild the base so the fix lasts rather than dropping again.

Do I need to pay anything up front?+

No. No Deposit Needed — you pay when the job is finished.
