Should you repair your driveway or replace it?

Start with the base, not the surface

Whatever material you have — tarmac, block paving, resin or a patio — the surface is only as good as what's underneath it. If the sub-base is sound, most surface-level problems are genuinely repairable. If the base has failed, patching the surface over it is money spent on a repair that won't last.

Signs the base has failed rather than just the surface include level changes across cracks, dips that reappear after being filled, and damage that keeps recurring in the same spot despite repeated repairs.

How much of the driveway is affected

A single localised problem — one sunken area, one cracked section, one patch of failed pointing — is almost always cheaper and faster to repair than to replace, and a good repair can be genuinely invisible once it's settled in.

Problems spread across most of the driveway are a different calculation. If you're looking at repairing several separate areas that together add up to a large share of the total surface, a full replacement often works out better value than a series of patches, and gives you a driveway that's uniform in age and condition.

• Base failure confirmed in the affected area: repair needs to include the base, not just the surface
• Surface near or past its expected working life: replacement may be the more durable long-term option

Age and remaining life

Every surface type has a realistic working life, and a driveway nearing the end of that range is a weaker candidate for investing in repairs — you may be paying for a fix that only buys another year or two before the next problem appears.

A driveway that's relatively young with an isolated fault is the clearest case for repair rather than replacement.

What a like-for-like repair genuinely offers

For block paving especially, a proper repair reuses the original blocks, so a well-done localised relay can be visually indistinguishable from the rest of the driveway — a genuine advantage over tarmac or resin, where a patch can be harder to blend in perfectly, particularly once the surrounding material has weathered.

When replacement is the cheaper answer long term

Replacement tends to work out better value when the base has failed across a large area, when the surface is old enough that further repairs are only ever short-term, or when you're already planning to change the layout, drainage or surface material — in which case patching the old surface first is money that gets thrown away.

Getting an honest answer

The most useful thing a contractor can do at this stage is tell you plainly which category your driveway falls into, rather than defaulting to whichever job is bigger. We assess the base condition, the age of the surface and the extent of the damage before recommending either option.
