What you are really paying for
A driveway quote is rarely dominated by the visible surface. The bulk of the labour and material sits underneath: excavating the existing surface, carting the spoil away, importing and compacting sub-base, and setting edge restraints so the finished surface has something to push against.
That is why two quotes for the same square metreage can be hundreds of pounds apart. One may assume a straight overlay on whatever is there; the other may include a full dig-out to the depth the ground actually needs.
- Excavation depth and how much spoil has to be removed
- Sub-base type and compacted depth
- Edge restraints, kerbs and any retaining detail
- Drainage — channel drains, soakaways or permeable build-up
- The surface material and its border detailing
Size is not the only multiplier
Square metreage sets the baseline, but access changes the labour hours significantly. A front driveway with a wide dropped kerb and space to park a tipper is a very different job from a rear plot reached down a Tyneside back lane where every barrow load is walked out by hand.
Levels matter too. Newcastle has plenty of sloping frontages, particularly on the western side of the city, and a driveway that has to hold a gradient needs more careful setting out, sometimes steps or a small retaining wall, and always more attention to where water ends up.
How material choice shifts the number
As a rough ordering, tarmac usually sits at the more economical end, block paving in the middle, and resin bound at the premium end. That ordering holds because of the material cost and the labour intensity of laying it, not because one is inherently better than another.
The honest way to think about it is cost per year of good appearance. A cheaper surface that needs relaying sooner is not always the cheaper decision, and a premium surface laid on a weak base will not last long enough to justify the extra.

When comparing quotes, ask every installer for the excavation depth, the sub-base spec and the drainage solution in writing. If a quote will not put those three things on paper, the price is not comparable to one that does.

Often, yes — usually by adjusting the surface material or phasing the work rather than by thinning the base. We will not cut the sub-base to hit a number.
